A new comedy drama series set in the world of AFL is filming in Melbourne for ABC.

The Warriors stars Lisa McCune, John Howard and Vince Colosimo and emerging Indigenous actors.

It will also feature Indigenous writers and directors including Jon Bell (Cleverman), Tony Briggs (The Sapphires) and newcomer Tracey Rigney.

The 8 part series is created by Tony Briggs (The Sapphires) and Robert Connolly (Paper Planes, Barracuda), and explores the elite world of professional sport through the eyes of recruits and established players living in a share house.

According to the press release, “With temptation at every turn and a lot of football, there’s no guarantee these young men will run through the banner for the first game of the season.”

The cast includes Lisa McCune as the team’s communications manager, Vince Colosimo as coach and John Howard as club president -a nod to his 1980s role in The Club.

18 year old Gordan Churchill from the Kimberley will make his acting debut as Maki, the number one draft pick. WAAPA graduate Nelson Baker plays Zane, the number five draft pick. Ben Knight, Reece Milne (Home and Away) and newcomer Tasia Zalar also feature.

“What attracted us to this project was both the concept of following four mischievous footballers experiencing the highs, lows and often funny situations of life as an elite athlete, as well as the opportunity for Indigenous creatives to partner with highly regarded practitioners and accelerate along their career trajectory” said Penny Smallacombe, Head of Indigenous at Screen Australia.

“Film Victoria is delighted to be supporting the team behind The Warriors and also providing skills development opportunities for a number of Victorian Indigenous screen practitioners” said Jenni Tosi, CEO at Film Victoria.

“The Warriors is a wild ride that sees our characters teeter between temptation and dedication with the added layer of cross-cultural relations. It’s brilliant to be able to deal with this subject matter through a no-holds-barred comedy” said Sally Riley, the Head of Scripted Production.

It will air in 2017.

Stellar cast to rule ABC’s new drama Newton’s Law

Starring an outstanding lineup of Australian talent, ABC is thrilled to announce that filming has started this week in Melbourne on the eight-part drama series Newton’s Law.

One of Australia’s most celebrated actors Claudia Karvan takes charge as Josephine Newton and is joined by Toby Schmitz (Black Sails), Georgina Naidu (Wentworth, The Time of Our Lives), Sean Keenan (Glitch), Brett Tucker (McLeod’s Daughters) and Miranda Tapsell (The Sapphires) with Jane Hall, Freya Stafford, Andrew McFarlane, Ming-Zhu Huii, Will Ewing, Grant Piro and newcomers Ella Newton and Makwaya Musudi, rounding out this impressive cast.

Newton’s Law centers around Josephine Newton, a suburban solicitor with an over-developed sense of responsibility who attempts to return to her briefly glorious stint at the Bar.

When Josephine’s low-flying solicitor’s practice is incinerated by a disgruntled client, she is persuaded by her old uni’ friend and not-so-secret admirer, Lewis Hughes, to trade the benefits of her brilliant mind for a berth in the lofty glamour of Knox Chambers. With her office destroyed, her marriage collapsing and motherhood fast losing its charm, Josephine decides it’s time to take her own aspirations off the back burner and resume her barrister’s robes.

If only it were that easy to leave her old life behind!

Newton’s Law is the brain child of Every Cloud Productions’, Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger, the team that bought Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries to the screen.

CHECK OUT TOP KNOT DETECTIVE ON SBS WHICH STARS TOSHI OKUZAKI AND IZUMI WOODS

29th September 2016

The synopsis of the film is "In the early 90s, a little known Japanese Samurai/Detective series hit Australia where it quickly became a cult hit. In Japan it was called 'Ronin Suiri Tentai' (Deductive Reasoning Ronin) but in Australia it's only known as 'Top Knot Detective'. Created by Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce as a throw-back to th efilms and TV shows that were broadcasted on SBS in the 90s, this mockumentary tells the story of director Takashi Tawagoto, who couldn't act, fight or write a TV show, but through various underworld connections, he had the money to make himself into a star - or so he thought."
